THE AIA FELLOWS

The American Institute of Architects elevated 112 architects to its prestigious College of Fellows this year. The honor is awarded to members who have made contributions of national significance to the profession.

Out of a membership of more than 86,000, there are fewer than 2,600 AIA members distinguished with the honor of fellowship.

Elevation of a member to Fellow is selected by the Jury of Fellows. The Jury of Fellows consists of seven Fellows who are nominated annually by the Institute Secretary for approval by the AIA Executive Committee. There are a number of factors that go into selecting jury members including but not limited to equitable distribution by region and area of accomplishment.

The elevation to a Fellow is conferred on architects with at least ten years of membership in the AIA who have made significant contributions in the following areas: the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession; the standards of architectural education, training, and practice; the building industry through leadership in the AIA and other related professional organizations; advancement of living standards of people through an improved environment; and to society through significant public service.

New Fellows are entitled to use the designation "FAIA" following their names. The 2009 new Fellows will be invested in the College of Fellows at the 2009 AIA National Convention in San Francisco on May first.
