2005 Region Design Awards Announced
The 2005 awards for architectural excellence were presented
at the AIA Northwest & Pacific Region Annual Conference held recently
in Seattle, Washington. Jury members included Jim Glymph, AIA, Lee Copeland,
FAIA, Susan Jones, AIA, and Evett Ruffcorn, FAIA.

Awards of Honor

NOTES:
· There is consistent resolution in the interior walls, floor, and ceiling
· Beautiful abstraction of simple bold forms
· Good resolution of detailing and the handling of natural light
· The building seems to bring the landscape into the house |
Sun Valley House

NOTES:
· This building exhibits simple robust building materials, complimentary of the natural wooded setting
· Draws from a Scandinavian influence from the community
· The building effectively handles the changing grades of the site
· It emphasizes a sustainable design approach, in terms of site plan, building orientation, and use of materials

NOTES:
· Intellectually, it is a great building and becomes a “sculpture sitting in downtown Seattle”
· There is architectural bravado in a purely conceptual idea
· The building advances the discussion of architecture in the community and shows the strength that has become Seattle
· It is an extraordinary project that is both controversial and embraced by the community

Theater
Firm: BOORA Architects, Portland |

NOTES:
· This temporary theater interior uses simple carpet samples and paint buckets for benches, and other borrowed materials
· The materials can be returned when the ten-day structure is dismantled
· It is creative and is the most “sustainable project” in terms of local and recycled materials
· There is an elegance of design through use of fabric

· This residence has a beautiful Interior and exterior
· A great site plan and orientation to the street
· Good use of the open spaces
· Project is nicely detailed |
Residence in Sun Valley

NOTES:
· The use of materials and fabrics worked to bring out an emotional spirit to the house
· A beautiful kitchen – good use of art around the space
· The artfulness of the photos projected the spirit/qualities of a wonderful house
· Robust use of materials, such as the steel cladding at the exterior |

NOTES:
· The outside screen serves as privacy screen as well as an art form
· Innovative handling of structure and site to get natural light into the house
· It is a spectacular house for a narrow site and has an artful, strong connection to the outside

Kotlik K-12 Replacement School
Firm: Koonce Pfeffer Bettis Inc., Anchorage |

NOTES:
· The school exterior is simple and nicely proportioned
· For a small population in this rural community, it is an economical, sophisticated building
· In the internal layout, there is circulation and interest in the corridors, and excellent use of colors and lines.
· This design made a strong architectural statement in a rough Alaskan environment

NOTES:
· This building remodel and new addition is sensibly executed and adds to the historical value of the waterfront, with an effective contrast of old and new
· The “clunkyness” of it adds an element of fun and is attractive
· A combination of metal and steel as exterior materials
· The new addition captures the scale of its existing industrial counterpart and makes a strong structural statement.

NOTES:
· Interesting/cool interior and good lighting
· The atrium space is nicely transformed into an elegant garden setting
· Materials used are pleasing to view and to good work with

NOTES:
· This project was viewed as enlivening the neighborhood and a providing a new life for an existing inner city community
· Re-establishment of an “orthogonal” plan, similar to the surrounding street grid linking to existing neighborhoods
· Primarily a planning project. Architecture is secondary
· Embraces New Urbanism concepts

NOTES:
· A large-scale master plan for re-developing an existing urban neighborhood that provides new direction for sustainability.
· Provides planning and architectural guidelines for re-establishing “green streets”, effective methods of handling storm water, energy and water use, as well as the careful site planning and for green building design.
· Spirit of “new project guidelines” deserves recognition
· Challenges the role of the traditional architect
· Effective “carbon / water / money” sustainability argument, which is applicable to other urban redevelopment sites
